Exploring Marks and Spencer in Edinburgh: A Comprehensive Guide

Marks and Spencer, commonly known as M&S, is a well-established supermarket located within the Gyle Shopping Centre in Edinburgh. Offering a variety of products, including high-quality food and fashionable clothing, this store presents a unique shopping experience.

Food Offerings

The Food Hall at M&S is a major highlight, featuring a diverse selection of fresh produce, frozen foods, and their famous "Dine in for Two" meal deals. Customers consistently praise the great produce available, especially the deli counter and bakery items. For those looking for a quick bite, the café offers a variety of delicious options, making it perfect for a quick visit.

Service Options and Accessibility

M&S aims to provide excellent service with various service options. Unfortunately, customer service experiences can vary. Some shoppers have reported instances of unfriendly staff, particularly at the self-checkout, which led to frustration when attempting to use contactless payments. However, there are also commendable staff members noted for their helpfulness and professionalism.

The store prioritizes accessibility with features such as a wheelchair-accessible car park and a wheelchair-accessible entrance. This is crucial for providing an inclusive environment for all customers.

Payment Methods

M&S accepts several payment methods, including debit cards, but some customers have experienced issues with self-service tills, particularly regarding NFC mobile payments being down during busy periods. It's advisable to plan accordingly, especially during peak shopping times.

Parking and Convenience

The supermarket benefits from a huge free parking lot, making it convenient for visitors. The layout of the store allows for easy navigation, aiding in a smoother shopping experience. However, some customers have expressed concerns about the layout, particularly its ability to accommodate wheelchair users effectively.

Sustainability Initiatives

Marks and Spencer is committed to sustainability, with efforts such as recycling programs in place. They emphasize the use of energy-efficient equipment, such as fridges and freezers with doors that keep produce fresher while minimizing energy consumption.

Community Engagement

M&S is recognized as LGBTQ+ friendly and promotes a positive community spirit. Many customers appreciate the inclusiveness of the store, which adds to the welcoming atmosphere.

Conclusion

While the Marks and Spencer in Edinburgh offers a range of quality products and services, experiences may vary widely, especially concerning customer service. Whether you're stopping by for in-store pick-up of groceries or indulging in a treat at the café, there's no doubt that M&S aims to satisfy its shoppers. Emphasizing quality, convenience, and community, it's a staple in the Edinburgh shopping landscape.

I recently popped into M&S at the Guyle. It's an expansive department store all conveniently situated on a single floor. Their food hall is top-notch, offering a diverse selection of culinary delights. Additionally, they boast a wide array of furniture and home goods. The selection of women's and men's clothing is superb. The best part? Free parking and easy access to Edinburgh's city center via buses and trams make it a breeze to get in and out.

Plenty of deals to be found today. The staff at the store are always so helpful and friendly, whether you're shopping for clothes or groceries. However, the café could definitely benefit from having more staff who are better trained. It seems like the main issue is a lack of space and resources for the size of the store.

I must say, I've never encountered such a dreadful customer service experience before. Just a fortnight ago, I purchased a pair of school shoes for my daughter, and today, she returned from school with one shoe perilously detached from the sole. When my partner went to address the issue and request an exchange, the customer service attendant had the gall to refuse, citing the absence of a sticker on the shoe's bottom! The nerve of it all! It seems she even sought counsel from the manager and adamantly denied our request for an exchange. Their handling of this situation is truly abhorrent. I am resolved to never procure footwear from them again, and I shall certainly caution my family and friends against doing so as well.

Just popped in for a quick cup of tea before catching the bus home. The restaurant was pretty packed and felt a bit crowded. I ordered two pots of tea, one with milk and the other with lemon - seemed like a simple enough request, but I had to ask for a second cup and also for some milk! It's not exactly brain surgery to have a cup for each drink! It was good to see the managerial staff clearing tables so that customers could enjoy their food and drinks comfortably.

I absolutely adore this café! I've only started going there recently, but it's so spacious and the Victoria sponge is just divine, almost as good as my mum's!

A massive shoutout to Julie at the flower shop for creating the most gorgeous bouquet for my mate. It was pure serendipity when I popped in yesterday to grab some blooms for our lunch date, and there was Julie, whipping up a masterpiece with the freshest flowers in the shop. Cheers again, Julie!

I accompanied my 88-year-old mum for a bra fitting at the M&S store in the Gyle. The lovely lady assisting us was named Margaret, and she was truly exceptional with my mum. She dedicated over an hour and a half to trying on various bras with different fastenings until the ideal one was discovered. My mum was overjoyed, and I cannot commend Margaret enough for her patience and kindness in guaranteeing that my mum felt and looked fabulous when we departed.

I popped into the supermarket café today (13th December) and it was bustling as usual. I must say, I was really impressed by two staff members in particular who were swiftly clearing tables and keeping a keen eye out for any dishes on occupied tables that needed to be cleaned. It’s a common sight to see people moving dirty dishes onto clean tables just to make space, which limits the availability of clean tables. However, today there were plenty of sparkling clean tables available.

This level of efficiency and attention to detail wasn’t always the norm. I’ve witnessed staff passing by dirty tables with a trolley, only picking up one cup or plate before moving on. But these two individuals today were on top of their game, constantly cleaning and clearing up. To those two stars, you know who you are because I made sure to express my gratitude with a heartfelt thank you ☺️
Anna Gutierrez (11/07/2025, 11:08):
The food hall is really top-notch with a wide variety of high-quality and unique products. I particularly appreciate the fact that all their refrigerators and freezers have doors, not only to conserve energy and protect the environment but also to ensure the freshness of the produce. A delightful experience overall!
Kyle Nelson (10/07/2025, 02:31):
Today my elderly mother-in-law, who is 80 years young, had a rather unpleasant encounter with a member of the bakery team. She was in the process of selecting a cake when she decided to check the expiration dates. Suddenly, this staff member marched over from behind the counter and accused her of causing chaos, insisting that all items were meant to be consumed on the day they were baked. My mother-in-law calmly explained that she wouldn't be able to finish four donuts in one day and was simply looking for a later date on the packaging. The lady proceeded to raise her voice, asserting that things were always arranged that way and that my mother-in-law should refrain from rearranging items. Such behavior is unacceptable towards anyone, let alone a senior citizen of 80 years.
Zachary Myers (06/07/2025, 10:23):
A rather typical range of higher quality clothing and food.
However, their footwear department is a complete letdown! Extremely low-quality, uncomfortable, poorly made items at extravagant prices.
Buyers, oh dear buyers, please consider sourcing from better suppliers as this range is simply dreadful across all your stores.
Billy Brown (06/07/2025, 03:54):
This store has sections for men, women, kids, and food. The clothing in this store appears to be a bit pricey but of high quality. There is a wide variety available for men.

The food section also offers a good selection of frozen foods. I particularly enjoy the shortbread they have. Recently, there has been a discount on cookies and biscuits for the past few months, which is very appealing.

All the other M&S stores mostly offer the same variety and promotions.
Joyce Martin (05/07/2025, 08:52):
The team at the store is brilliant. They offer high-quality groceries, home goods, and delicious food. I quite enjoy shopping at M&S. In particular, the staff at the food counter was exceptional. Janet, one of the team members, is truly professional and always willing to assist customers. Huge thanks to Janet for her outstanding service.
Harper Nguyen (04/07/2025, 07:29):
The staff are dreadfully slow, I've been patiently waiting for over 10 minutes to be served! There are 3 people ahead of me in the queue, and the situation doesn't improve when the lady attending to drinks disappears and the cashier has to step in. Perhaps some additional training would be beneficial?
Teresa Ford (01/07/2025, 16:27):
What a smashing sale they're having at the moment on items that are already quite reasonably priced. The clothing is the comfiest I've ever owned, and all the staff are really down-to-earth and ever so helpful. If they don't know something, they really put in the effort to support each other and track down an answer.
Charlotte Roberts (30/06/2025, 22:02):
I must say, the layout of the food hall is quite impressive and spacious, offering a wide variety of food items. The staff members are always willing to assist in finding any specific items you may be looking for, and they are always so delightful.
Steven Torres (30/06/2025, 19:23):
The food section is filled with marvelous products. However, the self-service checkouts are quite congested and tend to malfunction frequently.
Tyler Perry (27/06/2025, 20:26):
Absolutely spot on with M&S. I must say, the food hall deli counter really blew me away.
Layla Nelson (27/06/2025, 19:20):
I've popped into the store 4 times in the past 4 days, and each time the staff have truly gone the extra mile to assist a new mom who's been having a tough time. I can't praise the staff enough, especially Sarah in the clothing department who helped me pick out a dress, and Iain who specializes in suits. Their attention to detail and care for both me and my little boy really stood out – keeping him happy and smiling throughout.
Brandon Lewis (26/06/2025, 08:53):
The Christmas selection at this supermarket is absolutely smashing, with a cracking variety of festive products. And let me tell you, the food hall is an absolute treat for the eyes and the taste buds! The deli meats, cheeses, olives, and all the accompaniments are top-notch. A jolly good show all around!
